Bath International Excellence Scholarship UK (2026/2027)

Studying in the United Kingdom is a major financial commitment for international students. To help ease this burden, the University of Bath has introduced the brand-new Bath International Excellence Scholarship for the 2026/2027 academic year.

This guide breaks down everything you need to know about the award. It covers who qualifies, how much money you can receive, and exact steps to make your application stand out.

What is the Scholarship Worth?

The University of Bath will give this prestigious award to up to 300 high-achieving students from around the world.

If you win, you will receive an £8,000 discount on your tuition fees for each year of full-time study. Because most undergraduate degrees in the UK take three years to complete, the maximum total value of this award is £24,000.

It is important to understand how this money is applied. The university will not transfer this money into your personal bank account to spend on rent or food. Instead, they will automatically deduct the £8,000 from your annual tuition fee bill. You cannot exchange this discount for cash or any other type of financial reward.

Who is Eligible to Apply?

The university has strict rules regarding who can receive this money. To qualify, you must check all of the following boxes:

  • You must be a new student: This scholarship is only for first-year undergraduate students starting their higher education journey.
  • You must pay overseas fees: UK universities charge different tuition rates depending on where you live. The university must officially classify you as an “overseas fee-paying student.” If your status later changes to a “home” student, the scholarship will stop.
  • You must hold an offer: You cannot apply for the scholarship until the University of Bath has officially offered you a place to study a full-time undergraduate degree starting in September 2026.
  • You must choose the right course: Almost all undergraduate courses are eligible. However, students applying for the MArch Architecture degree cannot apply. If you are studying the BSc Architecture degree, you are fully eligible.

How to Apply

You cannot apply for this scholarship on the main UCAS website. You must apply directly through the university.

First, you must wait until you receive an official offer of admission from the University of Bath. You must also wait until the university confirms your overseas fee status.

Once you have your offer, log into your personal Bath Application Tracker online. You will find the official scholarship application form there.

The application window opens on Thursday, January 8, 2026, and closes on Thursday, June 25, 2026.

How to Answer the Application Questions

The application form does not ask for a long essay. Instead, you must answer three specific questions. You only have 750 characters (including spaces) for each answer. This is about 100 to 150 words per question, so you must be clear and direct.

The scholarship committee will read your answers and look at your academic grades. Here is how to approach each question:

1. How will the scholarship benefit you and help you achieve your future ambitions? Do not just say the money will help you pay for school. Be specific about your career goals. Explain what you plan to do after you graduate. How will a degree from Bath help you get there? Mention how this financial support will give you more time to focus on your studies, join academic clubs, or gain work experience instead of worrying about tuition fees.

2. How do your accomplishments and skills make you a good candidate for this scholarship? This is your chance to highlight your past success. Mention high academic grades, but also talk about leadership roles, volunteer work, or difficult projects you have completed. Show the university that you are a hard worker who overcomes challenges. Connect your past skills to your ability to succeed at a top-tier university.

3. How will you contribute to the Bath community and act as a future ambassador for the University? Universities want students who will make their campus a better place. Talk about the clubs, sports teams, or student societies you want to join at Bath. Explain how you will share your culture with others. An “ambassador” is someone who represents the school well. Mention how you plan to support other international students or represent the university proudly in your future career.

Important Deadlines and Results

The university reviews applications and hands out awards continuously throughout the year. You will not be at a disadvantage if you apply later, as long as you meet the final deadline.

The date you receive your result depends entirely on when you submit your form:

  • Submit by April 1, 2026 -> Receive your outcome by April 30, 2026.
  • Submit by May 14, 2026 -> Receive your outcome by May 28, 2026.
  • Submit by June 25, 2026 -> Receive your outcome by July 9, 2026.

These early result dates are helpful. They allow you to know exactly how much money you have before you make your final university choices.

Understanding the UCAS “Firm Choice” Rule

If the university selects you for the scholarship, there is one major condition you must meet to actually receive the money. You must make the University of Bath your firm choice on your UCAS application.

In the UK university system, your “firm choice” is your absolute first choice school. Your “insurance choice” is your backup plan. If you win this scholarship but put Bath as your insurance choice, you will lose the award.

Rules for Work Placements and Long Courses

Many degrees at Bath include a year in industry (a work placement) or a year studying abroad. These courses usually take four years instead of three. The scholarship rules change slightly for these longer programs:

  • Placement or Study Abroad Years: You will not receive an £8,000 discount during a year spent working or studying abroad. For a standard four-year course with a placement in year three, you will receive the discount in years one, two, and four.
  • Four-Year Full-Time Courses: If your course involves four years of continuous full-time study on campus, you will only receive the £8,000 discount for the first three years.
  • Half-Year Placements: Courses like BSc Architecture and BSc Business feature half-year placements during the second and third years. For these specific degrees, the payment schedule is different. You will receive £8,000 in years one and four. You will receive £4,000 in years two and three. The total maximum award remains £24,000.
  • Preparatory Years: If you are taking the MPharm Pharmacy degree with a preparatory year (year zero), the discount will apply to that initial preparatory year.

What Happens if You Defer Your Studies?

Sometimes, students need to delay their university start date. This is called “deferring.”

If you applied to the university in a previous year and deferred your start date to September 2026, you are welcome to apply for this new scholarship now. If you win, it will replace any older scholarship awards you currently hold.

However, if you win the Bath International Excellence Scholarship this year, and then decide to defer your start date to September 2027 or later, the university will cancel the scholarship. You will have to submit a brand new application in the year you finally begin your classes.

Managing Your Finances Beyond the Scholarship

While saving £24,000 on tuition is a massive help, you must still plan for your daily living costs. Rent, food, travel, and study materials in the UK require careful budgeting.

The University of Bath has a dedicated Student Money Advice team. They provide expert financial guidance specifically tailored for international and European Union students. They can help you create a budget and understand the true cost of living in the city of Bath.

Additionally, you should explore external funding. Many international organizations, charities, and government programs offer financial support to students studying overseas. Websites like Save the Student offer excellent, independent advice and large databases of scholarships available to international learners studying in the UK.
