Congratulations on your admission! After celebrating your JAMB and Post-UTME success, the very next challenge you will face is finding accommodation.

Every new student (fresher) has to make a big choice: should you live inside the school hostel, or should you rent an apartment off-campus?

Both options have their good and bad sides. To help you make the best decision for your first year, let us compare them.

On-Campus Hostels (School Hostels)

Living inside the university campus is the traditional student experience. In most Nigerian federal and state universities, the school management heavily subsidizes these hostels.

The Advantages:

  • Very Cheap: School hostels are usually the cheapest option. You only pay a fixed amount once a session.
  • Proximity to Classes: You can wake up at 7:30 AM for an 8:00 AM class and still make it. You will save a lot of money on transportation.
  • Maximum Security: Campus gates are guarded by school security. It is generally the safest place for a new student to live.
  • Easy Networking: You will meet hundreds of other students. This makes it very easy to form study groups, get past questions, and make lifelong friends.

The Disadvantages:

  • Overcrowding: A room meant for four people might officially hold eight. When you add “squatters,” it can become very uncomfortable.
  • Shared Facilities: You will have to share bathrooms and kitchens with many other students. This requires a lot of patience and high personal hygiene.
  • Strict Rules: School hostels have strict curfews. If the gate closes at 10:00 PM, you cannot enter or leave after that time.

Off-Campus Hostels (Private Lodges)

Living off-campus means renting a room, a self-contain, or a flat in the town or streets surrounding the university.

The Advantages:

  • Total Privacy: You have your own space. You can study in peace without dealing with noisy roommates or loud hostel politics.
  • Better Amenities: Most off-campus lodges come with personal bathrooms, personal kitchens, and sometimes personal water pumps.
  • Total Freedom: There are no strict school curfews. You can move around as you like and cook whatever you want.

The Disadvantages:

  • Very Expensive: Renting a lodge is costly. You will also pay agent fees, agreement fees, and buy your own furniture or generator.
  • Transportation Costs: You will have to pay for a shuttle, bike, or bus every day to get to your lecture halls.
  • Security Risks: Off-campus areas are more vulnerable to robberies or community clashes. You do not have the protection of the university security team.

The Final: Which is Better?

For a 100-level student, living in the on-campus school hostel is highly recommended. As a fresher, you do not know the university environment yet. The school hostel keeps you safe while you learn how the academic system works. It forces you to mingle, make friends, and get vital information quickly.

Many students miss impromptu tests or important departmental information simply because they live far away off-campus.

Endure the school hostel for your first year. By the time you get to 200-level, you will have enough experience, friends, and knowledge of the town to safely rent a beautiful place off-campus.
