The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) is one of the best opportunities for students today. It provides a zero-interest loan to help you pay your school fees and can even give you a monthly upkeep allowance.
Applying for this loan is completely free and done online. You do not need to know anyone in the government to get it.
If you want to apply without making mistakes that could get your application rejected, follow this simple step-by-step guide carefully.
What You Need Before Applying
Before you open the NELFUND portal, you need to gather your documents. Having these ready will make your application fast and stress-free.
Here is exactly what you need:
- JAMB Admission Letter: This proves you are a genuine student admitted into a recognized public institution.
- National Identification Number (NIN): Ensure the name on your NIN matches your school documents.
- Bank Verification Number (BVN): This is required for financial security and to receive your monthly upkeep.
- Matriculation or Registration Number: Your university or polytechnic must have uploaded your name to the NELFUND database using this number.
Step 1: Create Your Account
The first thing you must do is visit the official NELFUND student loan portal at portal.nelf.gov.ng.
Click on the “Apply Now” or “Get Started” button prominently displayed on the page.
The system will ask if you are a Nigerian. Click “Yes.” It will then ask you to select your institution from a list and enter your matriculation number. This step verifies that your school has actually submitted your details to the government’s database.
Next, click “Verify with JAMB.” You will need to input your JAMB registration number and your NIN. Once your identity is confirmed, enter your active email address and create a strong password.
Check your email inbox immediately. NELFUND will send you a verification link. Click that link to activate your new account.
Step 2: Complete Your Profile
Now, return to the portal and log in using your email and the password you just created.
You need to fill in your contact details first. This includes your active phone number, your full residential address, your state, and your local government area.
After saving that, move to the educational details section. Select your higher institution again and type in your matriculation number accurately.
Finally, enter your personal bank details. You must provide your BVN, select your bank from the dropdown menu, and input your account number. Make sure this is your personal bank account, not a parent’s account, because this is where your upkeep money will go.
Step 3: Request for the Loan
Once your profile is fully complete, look at the top right corner of your dashboard. Click the button that says “Request for Student Loan.”
Here, you have a very important choice to make. You can request the loan just to cover your institutional charges (your school fees). Or, you can tick a specific checkbox to also request the monthly personal upkeep allowance.
If you tick the upkeep option, the government will send a monthly stipend directly to your bank account. However, your actual school fees will always be paid directly to your university’s account.
Step 4: Upload Documents and Submit
The last major step is uploading your supporting documents.
Scan your JAMB admission letter and upload it. The system makes this mandatory. You can also upload your student ID card or school invoice if you have them. Ensure the scanned copies are very clear and easy to read.
After uploading, the system will show you a final summary of your application. Read through everything carefully to avoid spelling errors.
Check the boxes to agree to the Terms and Conditions and the Global Standing Instruction (GSI) Mandate. This mandate simply means you agree to repay the loan later.
Click “Submit Application.”
What Happens Next?
Once you hit submit, your job is done. You can log into the portal at any time and click on the “Loans” tab to monitor your application status. You will also get an email notification once you are approved.
Remember, you only start repaying this interest-free loan two years after you complete your mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program. At that time, 10% of your salary will be automatically deducted when you get a job until the loan is cleared.
Take your time during the application, double-check your numbers, and you will get approved without any issues.
